Understanding the condition
What is Spondylolisthesis?
Spondylolisthesis occurs when one vertebra slips forward relative to the vertebra below it. This can affect spinal alignment and may place pressure on nearby nerves.
The condition may result from age-related degeneration, stress fractures, congenital changes, or injury. The degree of slippage can vary, and not everyone with spondylolisthesis develops symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they are often related to nerve compression or reduced spinal stability.

Assessment & Imaging
How is it diagnosed?
Diagnosis begins with a detailed history and examination. X-rays are commonly used to identify vertebral slippage, while MRI or CT scans may be used to assess nerve compression and spinal stability.
Treatment
Treatment Options
Treatment is based on your symptoms, examination findings, imaging, and how the condition affects your day-to-day life.
Many patients achieve good symptom control without surgery.
Treatment may include:
- Physiotherapy
- Exercise physiology
- Activity modification
- Pain-relieving medication
- Anti-inflammatory medication
- Image-guided spinal injections
Surgery may be considered when symptoms persist or when neurological deficits develop.
Procedures may include:
- Decompression surgery
- Lumbar fusion surgery
